Not until you need it and then it's worth every penny. Problem is "DO YOU FEEL LUCKY" ... for me it's worth every penny not only in preventing costly damage, but the inconvenience of having to deal with damaged items in the middle of a road trip. I really like my PI unit with the remote readout since I have a continuous readout of voltage and amperage draw. I also have the hardwired unit so nothing to remember to plug in, store or worry about it growing legs.
