surge protection

am interested in surge protection but am lost when looking at reviews. Both seem to be disliked, either of the two offered by amazon or other RV dealers. the technology research surge guard 34730 and the progressive EMS-PY30 C are the ones I'm looking at and some do not last very long and customer service is bad. what have you done for protection?
  • TRC---surge guard
    1 yr. LIMITED warranty
No serviceable parts. Throw away unit
    So-so customer service

    PI---surge guard
    LIFETIME Warranty
    Serviceable Units can be repaired
    Good customer service

    Easy decision!
  • My progressive ind. wired in unit has saved me a few times and with the remote read out you can see exactly how much power is being used ( volts and amps ).
  • Hughes now has an autoformer that does surge, and polarity checks.

Since there is a lot of "hidden" damage from low voltage this "pairing" makes a great deal of sense.

  • I have the Technology Research surge protector. It has detected problems a few times. Our last outing it showed low voltage. It shut down to protect our equipment when voltage dropped to 100 volts. We've owned it for 3 years. Trouble free so far.

I don't see the Progressive EMS-PY30 C on the Progressive website. sure you have the correct make and model?

we've been doing the RV thing since 1986 and never had an EMS until we purchased a new MH last august. we installed the Progressive EMS HW50C. so far, so good.
  • The Progressive Industries unit is the best & has a lifetime warranty, excellent customer service. :)
  • These units go WAY beyond simple surge protection. They provide protection against over- and under-voltage, polarity issues, etc. They are usually referred to as electrical management systems, or EMS. Progressive industries is kinda the gold standard with full-timers. Most of us install the hard-wired versions so they don't get stolen from the power pedestals...

I haven't heard those "sad" tales here. both progressive and surge guard seem to be fine. but get a multi-function surge protector, $250 and up, not the $90 wonder.
