It's confusing out there. You can buy a device that protects against surges only and unfortunately, PI's competitor calls their equivalent a "Surge Guard".
Good advice why to get one and some good links are above. We've been shut down on an open ground so far (potentially a lethal situation) and low voltage.
Installing a permanently mounted LED voltmeter inside is another good mod. because you can see how the voltage is doing and if you are headed downwards towards 104 volts and a shutdown.
