Surge protection

I bought a brand new Jayco 5th wheel and have everything now set up the way I want it. We've also owned a couple of travel trailers and never installed a surge protector in any of them and have never had any problems anywhere we've gone. Now that I've got a new rig, I'm wondering if I shouldn't install one just to be safe. Like I said, never had any problem in the past but I'd hate to mess up my electrical system. How important is it really? If there is a spike in the power, what is likely to be effected and what damage could be done? The 5er has 50amp service but I always hook up to the 30 when camping. So far, never used 50.
If I decided to install one, what do I buy?
  • I think it depends on where you camp. We always stay at the same set of state parks and never had any issues. If we traveled to other parks we would get a a SP.
I do have individual Sp's on the major appliances.

Without doubt the Progressive Industries units are the best......either portable or hard wired.
  • Look at it as insurance. You have it for the same reason: nothing may ever happen but you're covered if it does.
