Surge protector error code

Can anyone tell me what code PE2 means on a 50 amp Progressive surge protector? Line voltage on both legs is 122 volts. I just relocated the outlet in my garage and now getting this code. I had to add a sub panel in order to make the move.

  • An open Neutral will cause voltage issues and possibly burn up appliances. An open ground could lead to a "hot skin" situation.
  • Consider yourself lucky, an open ground with 50a service can cause a voltage imbalance and fry appliances. That device saved you some $$.

While possible, this should be unlikely due to the design of the plugs and sockets. The ground prong is longer than the hots (and neutral) so it makes contact first--at least that's the theory.

The EMS is actually looking for a voltage difference between the ground and neutral, and complains if it's anything much greater than zero. The actual problem could be a poor neutral connection somewhere, or a poor bonding between ground and neutral at the main panel, in addition to a poor ground connection. It cannot detect whether the ground is a good earth ground or not, since it has no reference to earth potential.

"p" means previous and then use the codes below

    Error Code Chart
    E-0 Normal Condition
E-1 Reverse Polarity Condition (hot and neutral wires
    Reversed)
E-2 Open Ground (means no ground wire connection)
E-3 Line 1 Voltage High (Line 1 voltage above 132 volts)
E-4 Line 1 Voltage Low (Line 1 voltage below 104 volts)
E-5 Line 2 Voltage High (Line 2 voltage above 132 volts)
E-6 Line 2 Voltage Low (Line 2 voltage below 104 volts)
E-7 Line Frequency High (Line frequency above 69 cycles
    per second)
E-8 Line Frequency Low (Line frequency below 51 cycles
    per second)
    E-10 Replace surge protector mode

Thanks for the great response, I need to recheck the ground thru the sub panel.
