Surge protectors
Should we really use one for our 30 amp service and if so what is the best ones to get?

definitely get one. We use a Progressive industries 30A model with read out. It's helped many times by disconnecting the RV for high voltage, low voltage, and caught a mis-wired pedestal before we plugged the RV in. Somewhat expensive but worth every penny in my book.
