Surge protectors are like life insurance. You are betting that you are going to die. The insurance company is betting you'll live. We have been using a surge guard since 2004. We had one nearby lightening strike that took out various systems on several nearby unprotected units. We could actually smell the burnt electrical smell in a nearby unit. Our surge protector just shut us down and turned the power on after the time out. Figure it saved us many times the cost.
