Surge Protectors

I know the answer to this question will be simple for most of you, but for me it might as well be rocket science. My fifth wheel is rated for 50 amp service, but depending on the season or hook-up availability, I will sometimes use 30 amp service. The question is, do I need both a 30 amp and a 50 amp surge protector or can I use the 50 with a dog bone if hooked to 30 amp service. I don't want to buy both if not necessary.

  • I do it any time there is no 50 amp service. Yes it works fine. :)
  • With a portable surge protector you plug your dogbone adaptor in between the protector and the campsite.
  • If you have a 50 Amp system. Than you use a 50 Amp surge protector.
  • Hi,

Yes the 50 amp protector will work just fine plugged into 30 amp shore power with an appropriate adapter.
  • I recently asked the same question at my local RV repair shop. The owner told me that I had a very good question and immediately got on the phone with the surge protector manufacturer. The manufacturer stated that a 50 amp protector will protect all circuits on 50 amp service, and also pig-tailed down to 30 amp service, but a 30 amp protector would not protect a coach plugged into 50 amp service. Obviously, I bought the 50 amp surge protector.
