Fooling around with a WFCO (WTFCO) is like trying to trick-out a Yugo.
You will pay the price when those AGM batteries simply decrease in capacity until they are worthless.
With a digital hand held multimeter start checking both the positive and negative charging routes from converter to battery.
At a proper (STEADY) 14.4 volt level taking those AGMs to 90% state of charge with an EIGHTY AMPERE RATED CONVERTER is an easy-peasy straightforward exercise.
The charger cannot say "Ooooo I'll think I'll switch gears now" It has to stay at 14.4 volts the whole time. It's a WFCO to recycler moment. I fooled with a 55 amp model just to torture it. I did get it to charge at a decent level before the smoke started pouring out.
The real judge of what you do or do not are two batteries. You cannot persuade them you're right and they're wrong. They will simply get weaker and weaker then flatline.
I think you're missing my point. I'm not arguing that what is going on is bad for my batteries. Couldn't agree more. That is, in fact, why I started this thread.
My point is that if there is something else other than a bad converter going on here, replacing the converter will do exactly nothing to fix it.
Let me ask you this, if it was your $200 that you were willing to just wager on that it was the converter, would you do it? I don't think the evidence is definitive enough yet.
Several people have already said if you have 14.4 at the converter and 12.4 at the batt, you have a wiring problem, not converter problem.
Other than your obvious hatred for WFCO and previous bad experiences, what makes you think THIS converter is bad?
And if the charger can't change gears, how does a PD charger do it? Or any other smart charger out there for that matter?
