Swivel TV wall mount

I have a small 19 inch LED TV I'd like to mount to the wall where it says, "Mount LED TV here". I have the muti swivel mount, the part that gets attached to the wall is vertical with 3 screw holes. Now, question of the hour, any idea how wide the mounting plate behind the wall is? I've done the old "tap tap" to hear roughly where the center is, by the sounds of it, it's only a wall stud. Of course, call the company and it's not much help. I don't have a stud finder either. I suppose I could make a couple of tiny 1/16ths holes and hope for the best. Any pointers, thanks.
  • Well a little apprehensive this morning, poking holes can be like poking an angry bear. Took a 1/16th bit and made sure only 3/4 of an inch was sticking out of the chuck. Then by luck I noted the staple holes used to staple the wall panel to the studs. Bingo. Did the left, center and right hole within about 3/4 of an inch of what I figured to be the center of the stud. Nailed center dead on. Used 3 #10 by 1" screws to hold the swivel mount to the wall. Tight as a snare drum, attached the TV and it swivels around nicely and parks tight against the wall. Thanks for all the tips. Makes life easy. That studfinder video was eye opening too.
  • When I did mine, the tapping firm vs. hollow confirmed with a small drill bit. If multiple mounting holes, I make sure at least two are direct into the stud center with fat carriage screws. The stud will break first!
