I'm still not sure how these units "save" water. Save fuel, yes. Water...I don't see how. In fact, I still contend they will use more water UNLESS you either have a small tank which keeps a couple of gallons of hot water at the ready or you have a water circulation system that keeps the water at the tap hot.
As I mentioned before, we have an on-demand unit in our house but wouldn't want one in an RV.
As to the manufacturer requiring certified installers do the installation, the unit I installed in our house last fall was the same way. I opted to do it myself, even though I jeopardized the warranty. It was a gamble I was willing to take. But it was a fair amount of work in the house. From the original gas water tank, the gas line had to be upgraded to 3/4" and the water lines in and out of the unit also had to be upgraded to 3/4".
I like our unit, I just don't see it saving any water.
