The same would be true with a tankless heater so there would be no water/waste penalty. The main difference would be after I had heated the 10 gallons of water in the conventional unit and I don't use it, it begins to cool requiring more propane to keep it at its setpoint.

EXACTLY. even a tank heater the water in the lines from heater to outlet cools. Time how long it takes for you to get hot water @ the shower with a tank heater. And in response to dry camping. That's all I do. In 16 yrs I have been in a park 3 times & 2 were in a dry site. propane savings is a plus. I carry 122 gal fresh so that's not a problem. Some here seem to be very biased against them. But it works great for me. I suppose if I were addicted to park camping with close neighbors, party lights hanging on my awning, listening to the neighbors conversations etc it wouldn't matter. I will sell my toy hauler & just stay in a hotel. Dry camping is where these things shine in propane savings.
