I think they're just tied into the starter solenoid circuit. No blow, no power to the starter. It's not connected to the car's computer or other mechanical systems.
It's either that, or you give up your license. Michigan can and will also seize (and auction) a drunk driving car, even if the driver isn't the owner.
I think they've got tether devices that have a BAC meter built in too, so you get to do random blows on your tether or you get busted for probation violation. IMHO better idea for rehabilitation than simply disabling the a vehicle.
