Relax... They're checking up on the employees, not you. In a warehouse store like Sams or Costco, a lot of items are too heavy or large to easily go on the conveyor, so they remain in the cart or on the flatbed, and get scanned with the handheld, which allows plenty of opportunity for errors.
They do the checks to make sure the cashiers are scanning everything. Ever go through the line and the cashier insists everything go on the belt? That person had a recent scanning fail.
We're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. :)
