Relax... They're checking up on the employees, not you. In a warehouse store like Sams or Costco, a lot of items are too heavy or large to easily go on the conveyor, so they remain in the cart or on the flatbed, and get scanned with the handheld, which allows plenty of opportunity for errors.
They do the checks to make sure the cashiers are scanning everything. Ever go through the line and the cashier insists everything go on the belt? That person had a recent scanning fail.
Well, that's a very pleasant thought, and it certainly could be true. But I honestly don't think they're worried about you getting away without something you bought, but rather you getting away without paying for something you should have and didn't.
