IMHO there is a shred of wisdom in all these answers and suggestions, including (especially) R.J's
Common sense has to be employed. A battery is not going to throw a hissy fit if a 10C charging rate is used on a battery at 25C.
In Pianotuna's deep freeze, I would be sorely tempted to forego reliance solely on thermistors and instead spend that magic twenty-four dollars for you-know-what. His Brass Monkey environment lasts long enough to warrant it.
