I've heard that some people have success using a compass to check brake magnets,
Me, I jacked each (of 6) wheels to grease the bearings and gave each wheel a spin then shorted 12V and Brakes pins on the 7-pin connector. Each wheel stopped in a jiffy. Good enough for me.
2 years ago while on the road, I discovered that I didn't have any trailer brakes. Found a broken wire inside unbroken insulation.
