Testing my A/C

I have a 27 Foot Travel Trailer with a 1500 A/C unit. I need to test the unit before I head out on a cross country trip. Problem is I have only household current near the trailer. I don't believe the barn where the trailer is parked has a 30 amp breaker and I would be testing the trailer's A/C using a standard household 110 volt plug. I hate loading up the trailer and driving to an RV Park to test the unit and would love to do it here at home. What if I just leave it on for a short time. Will it blow the breaker or melt the extension cord?

  • If you do happen to find a 30amp outlet in that barn, make sure you test it before you plug into it. Make sure that outlet is wired for RV 110 volt use. There are some older outlets designed for electric clothes dryers and welders that are wired for 220 volts and that would not be a good thing. Just saying ...
  • I'd monitor both voltage and wattage with a kill-a-watt meter. If voltage drops below 105 stop the test.
  • Your A/C in the trailer is most likely wired with a 20 amp breaker and 12 gauge wire. If you plug your trailer into a similar outlet and turn off everything else in the trailer, you should be fine.
