The metal piece should stick to the magnet. If it sticks good and tight you have brakes. It it won't stick then you have a problem. For the other wheels that still have tires on them, jack that wheel up and have someone spin it while you apply the manual lever on the brake controller.

Ah...others have warned me about working with the drum off. That's good news. I've done every test but that one. I started this quest to test everything because nothing stuck to the magnets, then I learned the brake needs to be engaged for that to work, then I got distracted by other tests...endless videos...I'll do the magnet and spin tests in the morning.
