I would say that 42 SMD means there are 42 LEDs. SMD stands for Surface Mount Diode, the type of package for the LED.
If the LED light is substantially less hot than the 921 light I wouldn't be concerned. LEDs usually use about 1/7th of the power that an incandescent light does. Therefore, it produces about 1/7th of the heat for the same light.
