I think I change my batteries every other year or so. But realize the batteries in the thermostat only power the small circuit board and display on the thermostat and have nothing to do with powering the furnace. So they will easily last a year and probably three years before needing changing. Though if you're concerned you could change the batteries every fall but that is probably a bit excessive.
