Thanks Professor - tried to give Champion Customer Support a call today to work out the details, but the wait time was over an hour. As their Santa Fe Springs facility is only about an hour away, am hoping to be able to just take the generators down to their shop and let them deal with it. Will let you know how it goes...
Got through to Champion Customer Support / Tech support right away this morning and was told the following from the Tech Support guy on the phone regarding the module upgrade:
"There is no software upgrade. The only difference is whether there is an internal circuit breaker or an external circuit breaker. If you are reading something about this on the internet, it is wrong. We are the manufacturer and there is no software upgrade."
The guy actually sounded a bit exasperated / belligerent about it, so I didn't push any further. This experience with Champion Customer support was quite contrary to what others have reported on this forum, and was not what I was expecting at all.:(
I have to say.... "hmmmm".
My very first call sort of went that way. I did get both of my inverter modules changed out from CPE. The Champion 2000i inverter gensets would intermittently start my pancake compressor and definitely not start my skill saw. (individually, that is)
My first module was replaced with one that was rated without an external breaker. The sweet thing, it started my compressor and skill saw without issue.
Second generator, something happened where I couldn't pull the cord. That module was replaced with one rated with an external breaker. Problem with this module was that the voltage would take a nose dive and harder to start components would not start. Ummm, for example, I have an electric power washer. It too, would not start on the original modules. Second module of generator #1, no problem. Generator #2 with replacement module, because of the significant drop in the voltage...the GFI built into the plug would trip. (it is something it does when I unplug it.) The drop in voltage was documented with voltmeters. A call to CPE resolved this... they sent me another replacement to generator #2 rated without the external breaker.
Anyhow, everything works great.
