The same thing will happen to any new threads started. That's the way forums (and conversation) works - it sometimes drifts off topic. The advantage here is that the data is still here, you simply need to search for it, or ask.
Yes, a lot of topics have been covered countless times in this thread (and surely will be again), but that's the way it goes. Starting a new thread and fruitlessly trying to keep it laser-focused on a single issue is going to be hopeless, and all that's going to happen is the information will end up split between two threads, making it even more difficult for others in the future.
A FAQ post might be useful though, with links/pointers to specific areas of THIS thread, but it would take someone a lot of effort to put together, and then it's really only useful if a staff member locks the thread (so that it doesn't just turn into another duplicate of this thread) and then stickies it here in the Tech forum so that it's there for easy and frequent reference by those looking.
Not sure if that'd happen or not.
