I've just ordered one of these:
Mastech MS2108 True-RMS AC/DC Clamp Meter with Inrush Current Measurement
in hopes of addressing that very issue.
Also, something like this:
Extech 480172 AC Line Splitter
would be helpful for measuring AC current draw.
