Thanks for all the responses on this thread.
The 'trick the ECM' product link is here:
http://store.alternatorparts.com/frm-field-replacement-module.aspx
And here is the trick the ECM kit with an Adjustable voltage regulator:
http://store.alternatorparts.com/hd-external-voltage-regulator-conversion-field-replacement-kit.aspx
It appears the adjustable part of the VR is on the back of the VR casing, and it appears to be a potted unit. If this ecm trick kit could be adapted to work with a higher quality VR with a remotely mounted potentiometer to install on my dash next to my voltmeters, well I'll be a pig dancing a jig in feces.
I'll mount the dang silver box backwards on my dash if I have to.
Now while this product is likely nowhere near the quality of mex's fond product memories, Perhaps it is exactly what I desired in post number 1 of this thread.
This would be the simplest method for me, if it were to actually work. the site says if your alternator currently works there is a 1005 success rate, but if the VR inside the ECM has failed there is a 80 to 90% success rate with keeping the CEL off.
LEDcomp, have you upgraded the alternator charging circuit and grounds? or does it still max out at 13.4v even with a battery known to be fully charged. Fatter cabling on my Dodge increased amperage a lot.
