Digital thermostats only open and close a relay to control the equipment. I think on mine I could measure 12V, but connecting the two wires from the furnace is all that's required.

I bought one of the simple digital thermostats from Lowes. Works great.

Most if not all digital thermostats today are battery powered so don't require power from the controlled unit. May have to put a battery in once a year.
