  • I don't think I could survive at that temperature unless I had continuous utility power to heat both the battery and propane cylinders. In which case LFP would be fine.

If power went out, I think I could still make the night to roll out in the morning.

I can't imagine SiO2 retains all its rated energy at that level either.

When do we get a trip report? ;)
  • I'm just sorry I'm not there to break my personal best for cold--which is -37 c (-34 f).

It will be a good torture test for the SiO2 battery on the generator.

I can heat 100% electrically at -37. Not so sure about -40 though.

    Now it's +33F where I am (about +1/2 c)

    I've been out in -40 c/f a few times

But frankly -30C.. there is cold, colder and that is WAY TOO COLD .
  • Hey Don, yes it was a bit chilly in Regina today.

Here in Calgary it was minus 34 and the wind chill was minus 47.

We had to go out to run a few errands, I zipped up my sweater for the occasion! Still wore my runners though. I'll wait for it to get cold to put my boots on.

We Canucks know what winter is! :B
  • It got down to 5 degrees Fahrenheit last night and I'm charging my El-cheapo lifepo4 now at 20 amps..But I keep them under the dinette seat with the door open and an indoor outdoor thermometer laying next to my two batteries,so I can monitor the temp from in the house...

I couldn't replace my truck camper battery with a Lifepo4 unless I moved it inside or put heat to it...The going price for a cheap 100ah lifepo4 battery on Amazon is $319 with a couple just under 300...

That problem might be relatively easy to resolve (for some like me) by mounting the battery inside an interior cabinet and repurposing the battery box for storage - just saying

  • You could use a battery wrap heater on a car battery in that kind of weather. I wouldn't be getting lithium battery's either, we do cold camping here in Colorado and my battery's stay on the camper tongue of the trailer year round.
  • Living in an RV in that kind of cold wouldn't be a good fit for me. My furnace would be running 24/7.
  • That is mighty cold camping even for a caveman such as I! lol
  • You can keep that garbage, southern AZ for winter is just fine for roughing it conditions. ;)
