From the US border and further "down", 300W flat works fine through the winter, without any other energy source. Some caution is needed if you use MW, and battery bank more than 250AH, in case of (very occasional) rain.
This scenario is near perfect - plenty of sun, not much rain and not hot enough to need A/C. 400-500W flat is practically 100% guarantee that you won't need a generator, in these conditions. Except for Mr Wiz who has a big 120V compressor fridge ;)
Other than portable setups, very few people do tilting these days since panels are cheap. Tilting (if on the roof) makes a big difference in strengthening your calf muscles though.
