In my experience, it is best to have two sets of panels, and at least two charge controllers:
Set 1 is for the panels on the roof. A MPPT controller is a must, so you can get as much bang for your buck as you can. This ensures you have a baseline of wattage coming in.
Set 2 is for a portable set of panels. MPPT controllers are great, but a PWM is good enough as well, since you can aim the panels at the sun and set the angle exactly as you need.
