Time for tires?

We are headed to Colorado this summer in our 5 year old Jayco. The TT has the original Towmax tires (205/75R15s) that came on it when we bought it new. I have pulled the camper to central Arkansas and SE Missouri in the dead of summer and made several trips within a few hours of our home with zero issues. The tires look good and show no signs of cracking but all these posts here of tire issues have me concerned. Would you replace them or let them go another season?

  • My Cooper SRM II tires stood me in good stead for 9 years, including multiple trips to Disney and up to Virginia from Alabama. They still look like new. I am replacing them this week with Firestone Transforce HT tires. Got them for $138 each on Amazon with free Prime delivery, and my local mechanic installs them for $75. This was cheaper than any of the local tire places would install them for me.

  • I tried to squeeze 1 more trip out of my deteriorating trailer king (china bomb) tires this past October & got a blowout on I65. The tires were about 4 yrs old with 12k miles but had uneven wear on edges. Dw was upset, not only because she had to assist changing the tire on I65 while getting chewed up by fireants, but I later fessed up to her that I was aware of the china bomb problem & tried to squeeze 1 final trip before snow started falling & then replace the tires this spring.

So my advice to you is if you do try to squeeze more trips out of questionable tires, & you do suffer a blowout, then don't tell DW that you were aware of these issues. Better to show her beforehand some of these many china bomb posts, & my guess is she will be demanding new tires asap. :)

This weekend just got some new goodyear endurance tires(5 of them); she insisted on 5 even tho the aging trailer king spare had only a few hundred miles on it. Hope the endurance will hold up better. We will see.
  • DURO, Denman, Maxxis.... I have yet to make it four years without separation.
    Fingers crossed for Goodyear Endurance.
  • Hi.... I. Have a 2013 sundance, and replaced the original tires in spring of 2017 .with good year endurance. I have about 3K, on the good years now. Work out well to date. Jim2007. I usually replace the trailer tires after 4 to 5 years use.
  • Its much cheaper to replace at home than on the road. I wouldn't trust five year old tires and they could be older.

  • Locate your tire codes. On good name brand tires they recommend 6 years.

  • Unfortunately, after many years of towing, I have had more than my fair share of blow outs. My rule now is to replace trailer tires when they turn 5 years old (verified by the DOT number on the sidewall).

As was alluded to, it is less expensive to replace the tires early than it is to replace the tire plus the fender/skirting/damage from a tread separation.

And, since your next post might be a question as to what tires to buy, I will put my plug in for the new Good Year Endurance. I have LT tires on my 5er, but I switched to the Endurance on my 7000 pound boat last year. It made a big improvement in the way it tows compared to the OEM junk tires that were on it.
  • I think that i would replace them rather than later replacing them along with fender wells.
  • Getting close...and Towmax (Chinese) don't have a very good reputation.
Look on the side wall and find out when they were manufactured to determine exactly how old they really are.

My advice without any other info is to replace them.
    Have a good trip
