Tire change intervals

Hey all! How often should you change tires on a 5th wheel trailor. I've heard every 2 years because of possible inside band damage that can't be seen from the outside that can cause blowouts. I'm currently at 2 years on Goodyear Marathons.

Thanks for reading

  • UV and OZONE are tire killers. Blocking the sun's direct rays really helps. Large electrical motors can produce ozone. Look for micro cracks in the sidewall and in the tread grooves. Sitting, unmoved for years also weakens the tire structure. Tire dressing damages tire material.

But two years really surprised me. That's far too soon for me.
  • In my much experience towing heavily loaded trailers, if you tow it in any kind of hot weather, 5 yrs is max. If never towed very warm / hot weather, they will sometimes go longer.
  • My first two sets came apart at 3 years. I expect my current Maxxis to last 5 to 7 years.

Consider LT on larger (heavier) trailers.
  • Designated trailer tires have special compound that extends their life while sitting exposed to UV.
General rule for light duty tires is 6 years, for commercial tires -10, but that differs between manufactures and the biggest factor is how do you protect them.
I just replaced tires on my utility trailer. Originals were 25 years old and still holding the pressure, but I figured out I got my money worth.
But I am religious about protecting my vehicles from UV.
I heard keeping tires in mud and snow shortens their life as well, but I moved to CA to not have this worry.
  • Never heard that before....

I usually go 5 to 6 years before replacing tires on my 5th wheel.

The key to tire survival is to not overload, maintain proper air pressure, avoid curb strikes/road hazards, cover the tire when parked for a length of time and watch for bulges on sidewalls or tread.
