TO BRIGHT- HOW TO DIM

Help!...small problem, but an annoying one.
Our 2014 Cougar 327RES is equipped with standard light bulbs and what appears to be magnified dual light receptacle covers.
Even after removing one of the two light bulbs we find these to be to bright for night time relaxing.
Any tips as to how to dim the interior of our trailer.

  • I spray painted the inside of my lenses white and bought LED bulbs with smaller and less diodes on them.
  • If your standard bulbs get as hot as the incandescent bulbs did in my 5th wheel I wouldn't consider putting something like paper that close to them either GPG52! Good call not to take that chance with yours.

I don't find the LEDs I have in my current travel trailer to be anywhere near too hot for paper lining though, so I'll give it a shot on some of them and leave the others full brightness.

Maybe something to consider if you find the LED replacements you buy to still be a little too bright.
  • You take the 18 watt 921 bulbs out and replace with 194 4 watt bulbs. We did this with the lights over the bed, and in the toilet. The 194 is a small marker light bulb.

Ok, MOST RV's use a 1141 (19 watt) some use a 1156 (25 watts give or take) but there are several other lamps that fit the same socket. Some are like 10 watts.

Take your bulb to a Auto Parts store, find the light bulb isle/rack and read the specifications.. Tail/marker lights are less bright than stop/turn/dome.
  • The single layer piece of 20 weight/92 bright paper did absolutely perfect dimming our LEDs down to a comfortable level.

Our fixtures are LED fixtures and not simply LED bulbs in regular fixtures. Not sure how much that might make a difference though.
  • Thks everyone for your feedback.
Found some matching 4.3 watt bulbs and placed them on our accent lights and in the bedroom overhead.
Kept the others in place... now we have the best of both worlds.

Call me fussy... but all of our fixtures had two 921 bulbs.
Great for an interrogation room, but not so much for a relaxing evening overlooking a lake listening the the call of the loons.

With LED's perhaps. with Incandescent I'd not want to put paper in the fixture.. Fire hazard.

I see the O/P is off to the auto parts store with a list of wattages in hand and a plan to buy smaller lamps.. What I'd do if I needed dimmer.
