indeed, swamp coolers are great in hot dry environments, but they also require a supply of water... which could be an issue for long term boondocking.
We used a swamp cooler here in Denver for 12 years. They can do wonders in low humidity to a point. Once you get up into the 90's the evaporation process just isn't absorbing enough heat from the air to provide a lot of cooling for the air flow it requires. So at some point it is really just adding humidity to a bad situation.
I did consider putting a 12v fan motor in a smaller swamp cooler, like the little A/C it would have been good enough most of the time. The things against it were the size and the water it would need. The solar can produce the power to run the A/C over and over. We would have to drive 50 miles to get more water.
