Connect a slow-blow 5-amp fuse in series with the phase input leg. This should be resistant enough to inrush yet fail if a catastrophic error is present. Insulate the unit on a piece of plywood or double layer of plastic tarp. Make sure the unit's case has a functioning connection to earth ground.
If it survives the inrush load test. Connect with wire nuts a good load like a 1650 watt resistive load like a heater. Remove 5-amp fuse and allow circuit breaker to sentinel amperage. Leave it on for a half-hour. Turn it off. Disconnect power. Rub your hands all over feeling for hot spots.
Rather elaborate test but I do not like fires or a heavy pall of electrical smoke.
