The LI batts with those issues aren't sold to the public. The chemistry you're interested in is LiFePo4. MUCH less energy dense than the cobalt oxide LI's in the 787 or the lithium manganate in the Nissan Leaf but still MUCH more energy dense than lead acid. It takes a serious, continuous overcharge to physically damage LiFePo4 (like bulging case damage) and even then they don't explode.
