Uneven Tire Ware on Tandem Trailer

Any help on this topic would be appreciated. I have a 32 foot Travel trailer with tandem axels. Currently I am experiencing uneven tire ware on the right rear wheel. The outboard side of the tire is almost bald with only a 1,000 miles on the clock. To my knowledge, no damage has occurred to this trailer. I am curious if adjustments can be made to alignment of wheels on a tandem trailer?

  • If only one tire is wearing you may have something bent. If both tires on an axle are wearing (even to different degrees) it may be alignment.

I had both tires wearing with one being worse than the other. Problem was a flattened spring which pushed the axles out of alignment.

The springs on the outboard side had straighten a bit. The frig, stove, water heater, sink, and battery were all on that side as well as the ruff part of the road. In addition, they were 2500 lb. springs with there max weight sitting on them.

If you remove them and place them all side by side you may see the difference.

I replaced ours with 2900 lb. springs and have had no further issues (3 years).
  • W/ that much tire "ware", I'd get a "strate" 2x4 and run it up against that tire, and the one ahead of it. If its a bent axle, it should show up there.
  • Just one tire? First remove the tire for inspection. Look for any out of round or out of shape issues.

Here is a previous tire of mine:

It was hard to tell how bad until it was off the trailer.
  • There are many things that can alter the camber of an axle. Pot holes, collisions, or even jacking the tire up by the axle can cause the camber to change. If it's not a bad belt causing the wear on the tire, consider taking your trailer to a shop that can align RVs.
  • Totally agree with previous post. Went through this a few years back. I think we bent the axle on a pavement lip pulling out of a campground. My axle supplier thought someone backed into my wheel. Bottom line for us was a new axle.
  • Bent spindle or axle. It is remotely possible the tire has a broken belt, but I would opt for the axle. Take the tire to a tire store and have it inspected for free first.
BTW it is wear not ware
