UPDATE Removing Sharp Carousel Micro/convection

Anyone out there that knows how to remove a Sharp Carousel MicroConvection oven from a 2002 Itasca Horizon?

We're in southern Mexico so too far from an RV shop. I need to get it out to see if there is anything that I can fix or get fixed here.

This is a daily use item and we depend on it for cooking most of our meals. When the outside temperature is 26C (79F) at 9:00 AM with daily highs in the 30s we really don't want to fire up the propane oven! :E

A picture of the MW in the cabinet would be helpful
Is it an over the cook top hanging under a cabinet
Or is it totally enclosed in a cabinet

Bit of both! Here are the photos.

Plug is in the overhead cabinet

  • Sharp install manual.

-There is a large metal mounting bracket that is secured to the wall.
-Inside the upper cabinet above the microwave there should be 2 screws near the front of the microwave - one on the left and one on the right. See step 8 on page 7 of the install manual. The microwave's case is set up for 2 mounting points to the upper cabinet, although, as others have stated, there may be additional screws that are securing the microwave's case to the upper cabinet as well.
-Removing the grills from the bottom of the microwave will reveal 2 long bolts that go up at a diagonal that hold the microwave to the metal mounting bracket.

While this is true for HOME installs, it does NOT take into account the extra screws RV makers MUST install to keep the Microwave from vibrating and breaking the wall mount off the wall. EVERY over the counter RV M/W I have removed and reinstalled in the past 20 years(HUNDREDS if not Thousands) ALL have those extra screws that will not be listed in the M/W install manual. Doug
  • Doug,
Maybe you could school the folks at Tiffin. I helped a co-worker remove the below Sharp R1875 Convection Microwave from his Phaeton. It died and he bought an identical replacement unit at Home Depot. Tiffin only used the 2 mounting points on the top of the microwave's case in the upper cabinet. No additional screws were added to the top of the case by Tiffin.

When my Sharp R820BK died I opted to chase down the internal fuse instead of wholesale replacement like my co-worker did. Mine had a blown internal fuse, plus I did not want to give it up because it's a grilling convection microwave. The R1875 doesn't grill.
  • Maybe Mr Ranier could offer some additional info as to whether this unit has security Torx screws for the cabinet cover. Security Torx have a pin in the middle of the star shaped hole.

Factory approved appliance service centers have tools equipment and knowledge to deal with control and magnetron malfunction. Other than tricloroethylene I know of no alternative to flush conductive coatings off of high voltage parts. Living near the tropic ocean I have run into this problem with Pabasonic, Sharp, and LG.

There are TWO fuses not one in these units. Usually a 10 or 15 amp for power and a 5 for control board.

Forget Chetumal QR for fast service. Use Cancun. Tapachula Chiapas has a service outlet. I do not know about San Cristobal de Las Casas. Acapulco has five service centers and Villahermosa three.

    Hope this helps.

I WORK at a Tiffin dealer and have for 37 years. I have removed hundreds of Tiffin M/w ovens and ALL had those extra screws. I just cannot get how people with NO REAL knowledge of how items are installed in RV's want to continue to argue points that they are not knowledgeable on. IF you had the model that has the BOLTS(not screws) that come DOWN from a cabinet on top, then the M/W will NOT have those extra screws. The OP does NOT have that style mount. Doug
  • Thanks all for suggestions. It looks like it won't be too difficult to remove except for the weight. Heaven knows what I am going to put it on to look at. There is not Picnic table at the site; they are rare if not non existant in Mexico. The folding tables we carry with art light duty ones, in fact one collapsed a few days ago under the weight of a 20 litre water jug!

I'm not going to take it out until I find a place that may be able to service it. We are an hour and a half from Lazero Cardedas, 4 hours from Uruapan, 4-5 hours from Acapulco and the same from Morelia.

Might have to wait until we get to Puerto Vallarta or Mazatlan in a couple of months.
  • UPDATE:

I decided to heat another cup of tea, no bang, no smell, no smoke. Continued to use it. We are now (and have been almost three weeks) in Puerto Vallarta and still use the microwave several times a day. In fact at the moment it is cooking a pizza in Convect mode. It would appear that the arcing managed to burn off what ever was causing the problem.

I may still take it out and have a look myself and/or have a tech look at it.
  • There were FOUR screws , 2 large,2 small holding the oem GE MW, in this safari
A replacement GE MW, also took four screws, but did come with a wall support hanging plate to help support the weight ,(extra percaution for cheap cabinets?)
That took some small screws to fasten to the wall
The original MW lasted 15 years, this one has been hanging there 6 years
    Still rock solid

Every RV microwave I have had to deal with are mounted exactly the same as household. The only exception MIGHT be one or two extra screws somewhere.
There are differences. Mine latches onto a plate behind the oven, held to the outer wall with 20 smallish screws, then with 4 big screws it hangs from aluminum extrusions anchored to the ceiling.
