Using a Direct TV Genie in an RV

We just installed a Winegard Travlr HD (SWM) dish on our motorhome to replace the old SD-only dome. We have a Direct TV HR24-500 HD/DVR and want to upgrade to a unit which will record and/or watch more than two channels simultaneously. I thought upgrading to a Genie receiver was the solution. I was sure I saw posts about people doing this including just moving the Genie from home into the RV. But Direct TV Support is telling me I cannot do that with a Genie because of the associated technology and my best solution is to stream with a "Gemini" which seems to need a lot of internet connection. We do have a Verizon MiFi 7700 hot spot but not sure that would work.

We are not fulltimers any more but still are on the road 2-4 months a year. Does Direct TV have it right about not using a Genie?

  • I believe DTV limited home boxes in rvs a long time ago to force you to buy a mobile type box. If you shop around I think  you'll find internet plans are cheaper than direct tv. We have t mobile and it's pretty cheap for unlimited data. We both work remote as well as stream all our content and it handles it just fine. Starlink is another option if your stuck on sattelite. The old dish and direct tv is outdated technology at this point. Shocked they're still in business.
