Thanks everyone, some great input and advice. I really appreciate it... and will be processing it all this weekend to figure out the best route.
BFL, $350 was for the panel, not the controller. Regardless, expensive as noted by several.
As far as the voltage from the converter, battery unplugged, I haven't checked but will do that tonight. I just wired everything up a few months ago and the converter voltage was reading something along the lines of 13.8.
