You need to define "long term" though. We do just fine on the east side of Vancouver Island from mid-April to end- September using a cheap Chinese controller. They work just fine.
It is true if the controller did die, it is not critical. We are not that far from towns where you can buy a replacement. You can even go panel-direct and be your own controller for a while if need be.
There are just no hard and fast rules in this game, where everyone has his own scenario going.
