BFL, when you are not far from towns where you can buy a solar controller, you are probably not far from shore power (or your home) as well. Besides, if setpoints can not be adjusted and temp comp is either missing or is raising the voltage when it should lower it (because it is not remote), - you don't get a proper charging. When you don't get a proper charging, you batteries won't like it. So you have to monitor their health closely with expensive monitors, checking water levels and SG, and running a generator to keep them happy.
By longterm I meant a month and longer.
I realize that solar is not critical for you, and if it fails, the fact that there is a town nearby with solar controllers in stock would be of purely academic interest because there is no rush and you will order it online a few weeks (or months) later.
I recall the words of one South American Rv-er - "In the US and Canada you don't need to have more than 6 hours supply of anything".
