using trickle solar charger with 6v in series

Howdy. My MH at the moment has two 6v batteries in series. My storage site does not have electric, so I want to use a small solar trickle charger to help maintain them. I bought thispanel and thisregulator. Can I just hook negative clip to ground and positive clip to positive battery terminal that goes to my motorhome? Any down side to using this system?
Thanks
Bill

  • To explain a little more... any charge applied to your 6v batteries will be halved per battery. That is assuming they are balanced in condition and cables.

So that 1.5a charger is at best a 0.75 charger.

I use a 9W panel laying inside the windshield plugged into one of my ALWAYS HOT 12V sockets on my TRUCK and it doesn't keep the single truck battery topped off all the time. Its better than nothing however...

Wife brought it home one day - found it on sale somewhere. I need to get it replaced with a bigger panel one of these days. Even the truck systems has alot of things still running after you turn the ignition key OFF...

  • I bet it is a 1.5 AMP trickle charger or about 20 watts that can run 24/7.

1.5 amp solar panel is closer to 30 watts and only runs 5 hours on a good day.

The pair of GC2 need about double the single boat battery.

    X2.

You'd be better off leaving them fully charged with a cable disconnected.

Thanks guys, that is what I already do, have disconnect and use it on chasis battery and house bank. I have used a 1.5 watt trickle charger on my boat battery and it kept the battery topped off. I guess the 6v batteries in series changes the equation.
    Thanks

  • Hi,

Not enough wattage to keep up with the self discharge on the battery bank. You need at least 12.5 watts per 100 amp-hours. If the battery bank is 232 amps a 30 watt panel will do the deed.

I hope you kept the sales slip so you can return the 1.5 watt panel.
