To repeat and condense, #1 use the propane. It's not illegal and it will do the best job. #2 if you are at a gas station turn off the fridge for a few minutes and then on again when you leave. #3 It is not illegal anywhere except in a few tunnels throughout the US. Even then, many allow you to pull over, turn off the propane at the tank, have it checked an then proceed. It's such a minor inconvenience that there's really no reason to do anything else. Your coach and the fridge were both designed to allow this and 99.9% of the folks traveling out there with a propane fridge have it turned on as you pass each other.
