With the tow vehicle running watch the trailer battery voltage while you plug in the 7 pin connector. Does the voltage pop up close to one volt? No voltage change, no worky. Fix it.
Now if you want to pull some monster #4 wire from battery to battery with a separate connector by all means go for it.
