I do like the idea of having the panels tiltable/detachable. That might be the best way to swing things. I'd probably have to go with higher voltage panels so I can have a decent cord length, but at worst that means having two charge controllers (one for the sides, one for the roof) instead of one.
Essentially this would be the same thing as before, except the vertical mounts would be more intended to be used as a place to store the panels (tilting/removing them as needed) as opposed to permanent placement.
