If I had my way, MrWizard, I'd drop kick my generator, build an aluminum rack, and put on 1600 watts of solar, bump my voltage to 48, get a new inverter and be 100% off the grid.
But that would cost me ten grand.
I think you made the right choice on not buying something you don't really need.
I have only about 90 days where boondocking with my existing solar is reasonably comfortable. There are another 90 days where I can "get by" with 15 amps. Another perhaps 90 where I can manage nicely with 30 amps total--either two 15's or one 30. The rest of the time I need 45 amps.
I did a test on October 15, 2015. I used 20 KWH in 24 hours for all purposes including heat, water heating, running the laptop, cooking, running the fridge (5.7 kwh), and battery charging. That is more or less impossible to harvest from solar even with a roof rack. Nor do I have enough battery bank to store that much wattage. Those are other the reasons I've not spent the ten grand, and probably never will. I only plan on full timing for another 3 years.
Hence the need for me to enhance low voltage situations.
