Hi GordonThree,
I did not disconnect from the 12 volt source. The fan has always shut off as soon as I shut down the generator. I don't remember if the fan runs when the inverter is on.
I'm fairly sure it is a 120 volt fan--but of course I truly do not know.
It was soot--not a scorch mark.

What fan is 120 volt? Pretty sure the inverted fan is dc powered. Did you disconnect the battery as well?
A simple overheated component or two wouldn't have left a scorch mark up your wall.
