Hi all,
Magnum replaced the unit rather than repairing it. I'm happy that they "stood up to the plate".
The possible causes were:
reversed polarity (nope)
a short inside the Magnum (not likely as the generator and inverter were both off, and the catastrophic failure fuses were fine)
failure of the FET board. Three of them were burned to a nice black color, and one was 50% burned).
The infernal device is now reinstalled.
