The ports are supposed to current limit, and I have had the smart phone for over 2 years and never had a problem with any other charger even the el-cheapo ones. Definitely the ports. I looked up the DC-DC converter IC that is on there and it supplies up to 3.5A, and it is supposed to have a resistor that sets the current limit, so something is wrong in the design IMO. I ham tempted to open one of the still good ones so I can see if I can get the value of that resistor to see what the current limit is set for.
