Well, the problem is that I am an infamous over-tightener. If snug is good, snugger is better, so let's just lean on that wrench, and SNAP! So that is why torque wrenches and torque recommendations are so useful to me -- they protect my possessions from my chronic bad judgment and bad mechanical skills. Other folks who are more innately skilled don't need such persnickity guidance.
In the same vein, when my children were very small and I would feed them their baby food, they would start to cry every night after dinner, when I would approach them to wipe off their faces with a wet washcloth. It was a mystery. After they learned to talk, we finally discovered that I was wiping too vigorously -- it did not feel good. Same problem -- not very good feedback from the hands -- too much force.
So over the years, I have learned to cope by being extra careful when tightening bolts, etc. My error rate has slowly declined.
