Do you have to have a battery for the wfco 8955 12vdc system to work?

Besides storing 12 volt power, the battery acts as a filter, to prevent surges and provide power for high amp draws. IE: Things like a slide out, may draw more amperage than what the converter can put out. Without a battery, you could see things like lights dimming during slide operations, to lights completely going out, to slides not working at all. All depends on converter output compared to power draw.
If you're going to tow the unit, a battery is required for the break away system.
